"Have you ever been so sick or injured that you had to be hospitalized? Well, if you have, you know that because of insurance constraints and a shortage of beds, the hospitals do not keep you there until you are 100% better. They send you home feeling pretty lousy, sore and weak. They give your family instructions on how to help you complete your recovery. If you have really great health insurance, you might even be able to have a nurse or therapist come to your home to help.
Now imagine if you didn’t have anyone at home to help you complete your recovery. Someone to get you something to drink or eat or to help you to the bathroom. Someone to go to Walgreen’s or Eckerd to get your medicine or to call the doctor if you get worse. What if you are too poor or you are uninsured and you can’t afford to get the help you need? Who is going to help you recover? How will you get better?
That’s actually a problem that happens pretty frequently.
Even worse, imagine if you didn’t have a home to go to at all. Imagine being discharged from the hospital to the streets or the woods or even a shelter. How would you get the rest you need or the nourishment to get better? How in the world would you ever get well and get back on your feet? Well, chances are great that you would never reach full recovery. You might find yourself back in the hospital, maybe even sicker than before. Well, this, too, happens every day, all over the nation. What happens then? Where do these people get the help they need? Up until now, there hasn’t been a place to go when these folks are ready to be discharged from the hospital. Here in Central Florida, we have come up with a solution to this problem.".......Fr. John Bluett, from his homily of June 1, 2003.
PATHWAYS TO CARE is a 40-bed, not-for-profit respite center dedicated to providing health, housing, and hope to Central Florida's homeless. Our mission is to provide short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adults in need of temporary housing and support services in order to recover from an acute medical illness or injury. Opened on July 1, 2003 as a licensed assisted living facility, Pathways to Care's overall goal is to support our residents to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability. Clients are urged to develop and complete a social recovery plan devised to solve the root causes of their illness, homelessness, and joblessness. As such, PTC goals are far-reaching on an individual as well as a community level.
Incorporated in 2002 by an interfaith group of local leaders under the direction of Fr. John Bluett, Pathways to Care opened its doors in July of 2003 as a faith-based initiative, devoted to supporting poor, medically underserved people in the Greater Orlando Metropolitan area to achieve greater health, self-sufficiency and housing stability.
Pathways to Care is neither a medical clinic nor a medical facility, but rather an assisted living facility licensed by the state of Florida to provide respite care to residents recuperating from injuries or illnesses, under the direction of their primary care provider. Referrals are made from hospitals and emergency rooms that need a place where they may discharge patients for completion of their medical recovery. under the care of a professional staff.
Community Involvement
We are an extension of the health care facilities of Central Florida, working to reduce the return to the emergency room.
Pathways to Care became a program of Catholic Charities of Central Florida (CCCF) in January 2007. Collaborating with various community partners, including local Catholic and Protestant churches, regional homeless agencies and hospitals that serve Orlando, Seminole and Volusia Counties, Pathways to Care is able to fulfill their mission to care for a particularly vulnerable part of the homeless population, serving the greater community at large.
